Width and Depth

There is too much talk about width in the golf swing and not enough about depth. Width is generally the distance of hands or butt of the club from chest.

Depth is something that is less tangible but equally important. if you look at a swing from down the line and draw a vertical line from around the right heel, that is a good measuring stick for depth.

If you think of width and depth as a vertical and horizontal axis on a graph…too much of one and not enough of the other is where people get in trouble. Too much width and you get high disconnected hands over the head. Too much depth and your arms and hands are behind your turn.

You want a proper balance of both. Video coming.

It’s key when this happens.

The easiest way to look at it from a feel standpoint is get width in first half of backswing and depth in second half.

Nice. Go looking for depth early equals inside takeaway equals death.

I get the impression Phil Mickelson has a lot more depth than most. Is this right?
