Bobby Jones had a nine year stretch in the 20’s at The US Open where he finished first or second in eight of them.
Peter Thompson had a seven year stretch in the 50’s at The British Open where he finished first or second in all of them.
I had a three year stretch in the 90’s at the National Long Drive Championship where I finished first or second in all of them. 😀
I know it’s two apples and a rotten orange, but it’s my blog 😀 . I have already grouped myself with Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus when talking about the release, so I figured putting myself in with Bobby Jones and Peter Thompson wouldn’t be much worse.
…OK, OK, bad form on my part. Let me compare myself to people in golf that is more favorable.
I don’t hike up my pants so high I need to unzip my fly to blow my nose, I never made Tiger Woods swing like Charles Barkley and I never blasphemed by calling my book on golf a Bible…twice…and I have actually broken 70 in a tournament.
But could you out drive Jack Hamm? POW! I love watching stupid infomercials.

Bobby Jones was a weekend golfer, he never turned pro, so I would say he was the all time best in my book even with his slightly over the top swing. Rest in Peace MR Jones

You and I have common ideas here 😀

While we are at it we say a prayer for those men and women in uniform serving our country in those miserable sand traps otherwise known as Iraq and Aghanistan

Here, Here !!!!!!
Nice post Walter, I agree. I will play devils advocate about Mr. Bobby Jones. I do believe he is one of the all time greats but he did not have to worry about making a paycheck ( through playing golf) every week. There is a lot more pressure on a person trying to make a living at it, than one who is not. Just my opinion. Monte I played in a tournament with you at Blackhorse with Fairlee on super bowl Sunday. Was there the same kind of pressure in that tournament as there is when you play in a Monday qualifier or a nation wide or PGA tour event? Probably not. Once again I’m playing devils advocate, just want to here peoples thoughts on it.

Ben Curtis was once asked about the pressure of not doing so well. His reply was, ” I am married to the girl of my dreams, ahve a wonderful family, making a great living doing what I love to do what pressure. Now those people working nine to five trying to make ends meet day after now thats’ pressure”.

Good point Walter, but back in the day players didn’t have endorsement deals like they have now. If they didn’t play well they didn’t get paid. Mr. Jones did have a good job. There is guys on the tour now that might have 1 win and have more career earnings than Jack Nicklaus.
